Nearly 10 years after “Demolition,” Peter Busa returned to Valspar Corporation to paint “Sport” in 1982. This second mural is on the back of Valspar’s research and development lab. It was painted while the Metrodome was under construction across the tracks.

The Valspar Corporation in Minneapolis is one of the leading manufacturers of paint, so it seems only fitting that their headquarters is a lively abstract expressionist mural by Peter Busa. Painted in 1973, the stripes of the mural are visible from the nearby freeways and make for an iconic landmark.

This bronze sculpture of wolves by Wally Shoop is located next to the wolf exhibit at the Minnesota Zoo. It’s a nice sculpture, as wolf sculptures go, though it strikes me a little odd to have a realistic wolf sculpture next to the real thing.

“Picnic at Newell Park” was painted in 1987 by Chris Baird. The mural is based on photos she took of nearby Newell Park and historic photos, probably from the Minnesota Historical Society. According to the artist, it was first painted as a two-color piece in yellow and dark blue, then followed by washes in green.

This untitled painting by Gretchen Dreisbach is hanging in the Como Park Conservatory in a room between the new fern room and the palm dome. It’s always struck me as a rather nondescript abstract painting. She didn’t even bother to title it (and a painting like this just screams for an even more abstract title). The sign next to it notes that it’s a gift of the artist, which makes me wonder if they felt obligated to hang it up somewhere.

“H20 with Mind” is an eye-catching sculpture and fountain by Art Videen. It’s located at the corner of Grand and Ramsey in St. Paul, at the bottom of the Ramsey Hill and overlooking I-35E. It was installed around 2004 and includes a fountain that dribbles a small stream of water — which kind of makes it look the sculpture is peeing.

“Harmony” by Richard Amos and Aziz Osman is fairly well hidden in the Midtown Exchange building on Lake Street in Minneapolis. It’s down a hall that goes back past the Alina Commons entrance, away from the Global Market. The hallway takes a quick jog and the painting is located there in the where the hallway jogs. It’s not the best location for such a vibrant, colorful painting.
