Maybe it’s just me, but “Steel Helmets” by Anthony Caponi in Caponi Art Park has a certain grotesque quality to it. There’s nothing inherently grotesque about it–except maybe metal shafts being driven through helmets–but it’s what the empty helmets imply: Death. Suddenly what should be a clinical sculpture now seems like a profound anti-war statement.

“Snake” by Anthony Caponi gets the nomination for creepiest/coolest (you can pick) artwork built into the side of a hill. This kind of positioning is typical at Caponi Art Park (typically cool!), but it works especially well for “Snake,” especially when you get to see what num-nums said snake had for dinner.

A monument to a lumberjack is a rocket made out of saws? Ah, art, you’re so weird. “Monument to a Lumberjack” by Anthony Caponi in Caponi Art Park (yes, the man has his own art park–don’t you?) is just that. But at least it’s got some bright color, which is unusual for Caponi.

I don’t get it, but I like it. Who doesn’t like a rocket made out of saws?

Wikipedia defines capriccio as “an art term denoting the grotesque, playful, fantastic, transgressing the academic norms,” which might shed a little light on “Capriccio” by Anthony Caponi. But not much.

It’s still a funky, abstract work surrounded by grassy meadows at Caponi Art Park. One side of the piece strikes me as a Picasso-like face, while the other side looks like a fancy setting for Sesame Street’s Letter of the Day segment.

“Lovers” by Anthony Caponi, located in Eagan’s Caponi Art Park, is one of many sculptures by Caponi that depicts two figures embracing. This one is the more abstract of Caponi’s embracing figures, but there’s a clear feeling of two heads and arms completely wrapped around one another.

Located in Caponi Art Park, “Cornerstone” is a fairly unique piece by Anthony Caponi. The surface of the sculpture is covered in carvings of modern symbols and bits of language, unlike any of his other works.

Ah, rusty junk in the woods as art. That’s my initial impression of “Undertow” by Anthony Caponi, located in Caponi Art Park. And I don’t mean that as a slam–I see an admittedly strange beauty in rusty junk. There’s just something about the shape it takes and the way it slowly degrades, in this case returning to the nature surrounding it.

This Anthony Caponi sculpture in Caponi Art Park is called “Nugget.” Though it’s sudden appearance in a mossy area in the middle of a forest makes it seem more like a giant mushroom. The interlocking stone–almost like intertwined fingers–is perhaps the most interesting element of this sculpture.

“Struggle of the Elements” by Anthony Caponi stands between a tree and a fence at Caponi Art Park. Like much of the artwork in the park, the juxtaposition of this piece and it’s surrounding elements adds to the experience. “Struggle of the Elements” is exactly that, with metal and stone grappling with each other, as if the metal surged up from out of the ground and started picking up stones. It’s funky and interesting and kind of weird. Sometimes I like that in my art.
