Despite its size, “Gorky’s Pillow” is practically small by Mark di Suvero standards. This 1987 work isn’t as massive as much of di Suvero’s work, but it has the same metal beams and kinetic movement. This work is currently in the Bethesda Therapeutic Sculpture Garden (a few blocks north of the State Capitol in St. Paul), on loan from the artist and in partnership with Franconia Sculpture Park.

“Molecule” is another example of Mark di Suvero’s immense sculptures made with steel I-beams. This one was created from 1977-1983 and is in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

Created by Mark di Suvero between 1977 and 1982, Arikidea is 26 feet high and weighs more than three tons. The giant steel beems also sway in the breeze and anyone can swing on the wooden platform beneath the sculpture. The title is based loosely on the Greek word for spider, “arachnid.” It’s located in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

“Inner Search” in downtown Minneapolis is another example of a Mark di Suvero work involving movement and large metal beams. This 1979 work features a swinging “eye” that’s supposedly inspired by imagery found on the one dollar bill.

I think “Inner Search” — like most of di Suvero’s work — is best enjoyed from underneath the sculpture.

Mark di Suvero often uses large, metal I-beams in his abstract work, often with elements that swing or move. “Grace a Toi” in the Western Sculpture Park in St. Paul is no different. The massive work sits in the middle of the park, one of the large pieces near the top moving in the wind. Which is kind of an eerie feeling when you’re walking under it.
