Painted by Bethel University art professor Dale Johnson and his son Simeon in 2001, this mural is really a community collaboration. Children from the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul contributed drawings that Johnson recreated in the mural.

It’s colorful and playful, using space in an interesting way. I like how it doesn’t fill the entire side of the building, but instead leaves some white space. Not only does that make for a more interesting mural, but I would guess it’s a practical consideration as well — notice that the entire mural is high enough to discourage basic graffiti.
