Cedar Ave. Shell Station Mural by Elise Kyllo

it lights the whole skyyou don't owe me

In the summer of 2006 local artist Elise Kyllo, with the help of neighborhood volunteers, painted this mural on the side of a Shell gas station at 34th St. E. and Cedar Ave. S. in Minneapolis.

The mural features a quote from the 14th Century poet Hafez:

“Even after all this time
the sun never says to the earth
‘you owe me.’
Look what happens
with a love like that,
it lights the
whole sky.”

“The mural on the wall is just a glimpse of its greater value,” Elise said to the Corcoran Neighborhood News (PDF). “This garden of color came out of new friendships made and the joy, hope, and pride of a community effort.”

A year later Kyllo collaborated with the community again to create another mural at 34th St. E. and Cedar Ave. S., kitty-corner from this one.
