This 1955 sculpture by Anthony Caponi, located in Caponi Art Park, depicts two nude figures–one on the other’s shoulders–coming out of the ground and then going back in. It’s a bit baffling until you hear the story that the sculpture was originally a “sentimental sculpture of Caponi’s children” until it was accidentally knocked over, creating a “more interesting” sculpture. The wall was then built around the sculpture, burying portions of it.

The added detail helps explain the sculpture for me, but I’m not sure it helps my appreciation of it. It seems hard to avoid a sexual connotation to the position of the figures, which is clearly not the intent, but there it is.
