Colonel John H. Stevens by Johannes Sophus Gelert and Jacob Fjelde
This sculpture honors the first settler in the city of Minneapolis, Col. John H. Stevens. It was sculpted by Johannes Sophus Gelert between 1911 and 1912 based on drawings by Jakob Fjelde. In 1935 the statue was moved from its original location in Stevens’ Triangle to its current location in Minnehaha Park near the Stevens House.

I’m the great grandchild of Johannes Sophus Gelert, the turn of the century Danish/American sculpture.
I love finding info of my great grandfather online. If anyone else has info on him they would like to share, I would be very greatful.
