Artist Brad Goldberg created “Continuum” in 2001. The work creates an entryway to the US Bancorp building that extends from the street into the building. It includes a black and white pixelized paving stones on the inside and outside, sculpted boulders that double as seating, planters and benches that feature native plants and greenery, and three towering monoliths that appear rough, but then reveal a smooth polished surface (ala 2001: A Space Odyseey).

The whole thing works together as an exterior plaza/interior atrium that’s not exactly what you’d expect on a city sidewalk. A overview of the site from across the street and above gives an excellent perspective of how it all fits together (there’s a picture of that view on Goldberg’s site, though the site design doesn’t allow direct linking; click on Portfolio and then look for “Continuum”).

This work anchors the “Minneapolis Beautiful” project, a $4 million public-private partnership that’s creating public art in a three redevelopment area along Nicollet Mall.
