Mary Tyler Moore tosses her cap into the air in the famous opening sequence of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, an act captured in this 2002 sculpture by Gwendolyn Gillen which stands at the intersection of 7th Street and Nicollet Mall where the scene was originally filmed in 1970. The base of the sculpture asks, “Who can turn the world on with her smile?”

The cable TV channel TV Land commissioned the sculpture, which gives you a hint at which demographic is most likely to resonate with the sculpture. The show came well before my time, so instead of being familiar and iconic, her clown smile is a little creepy.
