Local artist Steven Woodward created the sculpture “Silent Laws” in 1998 for the St. Paul Companies headquarters in downtown St. Paul.

The sculpture includes a poem by Walt Whitman on the backside:

The Calming Thought of All

That coursing on, whate ‘er men’s speculations,
Amid the changing schools, theologies, philosophies,
Amid the bawling presentations new and old,
The round earth’s silent vital laws, facts, modes continue.

The poem is also repeated on the front side in braille using 627 rivets. The sculpture also includes two benches that are shaped like open books.
