Minnesota artist Norman Holen created “The Family” in 1981. It stands on the corner of 66th and Lyndale in Richfield. It’s near the Kirchbak Sculpture Garden but not officially a part of it, though it seems like it could have been an inspiration for the garden.

The work is dedicated to the families of Richfield and though the family-like nature of the three shapes is obvious, it seems a bit distant and impersonal. It might be the lack of interaction between the three forms, or it could be that they’re so tall it’s hard for an observer to interact with them. They feel more like sign posts.
